How do I choose the right ONU for your needs?

Choosing the right ONU (Optical Network Unit) is key to getting the best performance from your fiber optic internet service. Selecting an ONU with appropriate features ensures it will work optimally for your home or business needs. Consider these factors when deciding which ONU model to purchase or lease from your fiber internet provider.

Internet speed requirements

The first consideration is matching your current and future internet speed needs. Entry-level ONUs with 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports are sufficient for download speeds up to 1 Gbps. This covers typical residential fiber plans. But if you may upgrade to multi-Gig speeds above 1 Gbps in the future, look for ONUs with 10G XGS-PON compatibility. Business networks that need bandwidth beyond 1 Gbps should also opt for 10G ONUs.

WiFi capability

Determine if you want built-in WiFi capability in your ONU. ONU router combos integrate an ONU, router, and WiFi access point into one device for simplicity. This provides wireless connectivity without needing a separate router. Alternatively, you can save cost with an ONU that lacks WiFi and use your existing router instead. Just verify the router has gigabit WAN support to connect to the ONU.

Wired connectivity

Evaluate how many devices you need to connect via Ethernet cables. Entry-level ONUs typically have just one LAN port, while higher-end models offer four or more ports. More wired ports allow connecting devices like smart TVs and game consoles directly to the ONU for the fastest speeds. You can always add a network switch to expand the number of LAN ports if needed.

Voice support

Some ONUs include one or more RJ-11 phone ports for connecting landline phones and fax machines. This allows using Voice over IP (VoIP) service over the fiber connection for home phone service. If you want to use the fiber provider's phone service, get an ONU with VoIP capabilities.

Coaxial cable connectivity

If you plan to subscribe to cable TV service from the fiber provider, your ONU will need RF video output to connect a coaxial cable. Most fiber providers supply multi-purpose ONUs with built-in CATV support. But verify your selected ONU specifically supports passing through the cable TV signal to view channels.

Point-to-point vs point-to-multipoint

Basic ONUs are point-to-point, connecting your location directly to the provider. But multipoint ONUs with GPON support can split the fiber signal to connect multiple endpoints. Choose a multipoint ONU if you need to connect a cluster of buildings like offices, guest houses, or outbuildings on shared fiber.

Indoor, outdoor, and industrial mounting

ONUs come in diverse enclosures suitable for different installation locations:

Indoor ONUs can sit on a desktop or mount on a wall outlet.

Outdoor ONUs have waterproof casings and often include pole mounting brackets.

Rugged industrial ONUs withstand harsh environments like warehouses.

Some ONUs support alternate mounting methods like DIN rail or reverse power over Ethernet (PoE).

Management software integration

Higher-end ONUs can integrate with server or network management software for remote control and monitoring. This allows administrators to configure, update, and diagnose ONUs from a central interface. If you need unified ONU management capabilities, restrict your selection to compatible models.

Carefully weighing factors like speed, wired and wireless connectivity, voice services, mounting requirements, and budget ensures you select the ideal ONU. Consult with your fiber internet provider’s experts for specific recommendations on ONU models that will fulfill your current needs and offer room for growth.
