The exponential growth of bandwidth demand is driving service providers to adopt next-generation passive optical network (PON) technologies like 10G-capable XG-PON. A key component of these new networks is the optical network unit (ONU). This article examines the differences between GPON ONU and XG-PON ONU models, specifically looking at bandwidth, Wi-Fi capabilities, and use cases.

GPON ONU

GPON ONU support the ITU-T G.984 gigabit passive optical network standard. They operate at 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244 Gbps upstream speeds, delivering symmetric 1 Gbps connections to end users. Most GPON ONU have four Ethernet ports for connecting devices via copper cabling. The majority also come equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi capabilities, providing wireless connectivity at 2.4 GHz or dual-band 2.4/5 GHz.

GPON ONU are mass deployed globally and make up the majority of ONUs in use. They provide enough bandwidth for most households and small businesses today. However, their gigabit capacity will soon be insufficient as 4K/8K video streaming, virtual reality, and other high-bandwidth applications go mainstream.

XG-PON ONU

XG-PON ONU support the newer ITU-T G.987 standard. Also referred to as 10G PON ONU, they can deliver up to 10 Gbps downstream and 2.5 Gbps upstream. Symmetric 10 gigabit connections are becoming the new benchmark for future-proofed fiber networks.

XG-PON ONU come with four 10G-capable SFP+ ports and usually one or more gigabit Ethernet ports. On the wireless side, most feature high-end 802.11ac Wi-Fi supporting MU-MIMO and dual-band 2.4/5 GHz connectivity. Some ONUs also have an integrated VoIP port for telephone service

Use Cases

For operators with aging GPON networks, deploying XG-PON ONU is an efficient way to upgrade clients to 10 gigabit. This helps ensure they can meet customer demand for faster speeds while extending the life of their passive optical infrastructure.

XG-PON ONU also make sense for new greenfield deployments in high-density areas. The technology strikes an optimal balance between speed, cost, and power efficiency. Furthermore, the 10 gigabit capacity provides plenty of headroom to scale up as demands grow.

Finally, businesses are a major use case for XG-PON ONU. The 10 gigabit symmetric connections can easily handle bandwidth-heavy enterprise applications like data backups, cloud computing, and server virtualization. The ONU's SFP+ ports conveniently link to 10G Ethernet LAN gear.

Conclusion

While GPON ONU have served households well, they lack the speed for emerging ultra-broadband services. XG-PON ONU with 10 gigabit capacity provide plenty of headroom for future demands. Their advanced Wi-Fi and enterprise-friendly ports also make them ideal for business use. As fiber networks upgrade to XGS-PON and beyond, these capabilities will become baseline requirements for ONUs.
