Spain's Telefonica and Nokia, in collaboration with a leading university, have launched what they claim to be the country's pioneering 5G holographic laboratory, aiming to develop and test technological applications.

In a statement, the Spanish telecommunications giant explained its partnership with Nokia to deploy both standalone and non-standalone 26GHz frequency band 5G at the laboratory situated in Valencia's Polytechnic University. The facility is poised to become a primary testing ground for both private and public entities.

Their focus lies in crafting diverse holographic use cases, encompassing applications in education, entertainment, and immersive video conferencing employing "hyper-real" 3D avatars.

Telefonica will oversee network operations, including real-time 3D holographic design and development, alongside leveraging 5G cloud and edge computing infrastructure for immersive content transmission.

Nokia will provide the 5G equipment essential for the holographic studio.

Additionally, the university's Telecommunications and Multimedia Institute will assemble a research team dedicated to exploring academic applications of this technology and charting the course for "future holographic communication."

The inauguration of this holographic lab received funding from the Spanish government and the European Commission, bolstering a broader research and development initiative aimed at propelling the advancement of 5G and 6G networks.
