POE power is supplied to devices by embedding the power delivery into the Ethernet cable. The following are implementations of POE power:

 

IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at standards: These two standards define the specifications for POE power. the IEEE 802.3af standard supports the provision of up to 15.4 watts (W) of power, while the IEEE 802.3at standard (also known as POE+) provides higher power up to 30 W. The IEEE 802.3af standard supports the provision of up to 15.4 watts (W) of power.

 

Power Transmission over Data Lines: Power is transmitted over the data lines of the Ethernet cable rather than over the power lines of the cable. This is done by alternating unused pairs in the cable to prevent conflicts with data transmission.

 

POE Injectors and Splitters: For devices that do not support POE, a POE injector can be used to add power to the Ethernet cable. For devices that need to separate power from data, a POE splitter can be used.

 

PD (Powered Device) and PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment): A POE powered system usually involves two main components, the PD and the PSE. the PD is the device that receives the power, such as an IP camera. the PSE is the device that provides the power, such as a POE network switch. The switch detects if the connected device needs power and provides appropriate power when needed.

 

Overall, POE network switches provide greater flexibility and convenience for devices by combining power and data transmission into a single cable. This technology is widely used in a variety of scenarios, especially where there is a need to simplify cabling and reduce costs.
