"802.11g is a Wi-Fi wireless networking technology under the IEEE standard. As a version of Wi-Fi, 802.11g (sometimes abbreviated as "G") facilitates wireless local area network (WLAN) communication among computers, broadband routers, and various other consumer devices.

Origins and Technology of 802.11g

Approved in June 2003, the 802.11g standard replaced the older 802.11b ("B") standard and was subsequently superseded by 802.11n ("N") and higher versions. Over time, various Wi-Fi network classifications were labeled with different naming conventions, retrospectively referred to as Wi-Fi 3.

802.11g Wi-Fi supports a maximum network bandwidth of 54 Mbps, significantly higher than the 11 Mbps level of B but notably lower than the 150 Mbps or higher speed of N. However, in practical application, 802.11g connections typically limit application data transfer rates between 24 Mbps to 31 Mbps (with remaining network bandwidth consumed by communication protocol overhead).

Operation and Characteristics of 802.11g

802.11g employs Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) radio communication technology initially introduced via 802.11a ("A") in Wi-Fi. The utilization of OFDM assists 802.11g (and A) in achieving network performance significantly superior to that of B.

In contrast to A, 802.11g utilizes the original 2.4 GHz communication frequency range introduced in Wi-Fi, enabling Wi-Fi devices to provide a stronger signal range than A.

802.11g can operate across 14 potential channels, although some are illegal in certain countries/regions. The frequency range of channels 1-14 lies between 2.412 GHz to 2.484 GHz.

Applications in Home and Travel for 802.11g

Many laptops and various other Wi-Fi devices are equipped with 802.11g-supporting Wi-Fi radios. Due to its amalgamation of some best elements from A and B, 802.11g became the primary Wi-Fi standard during the explosive growth of global home networks.

Even today, many home networks operate using 802.11g routers. These routers, with a speed of 54 Mbps, meet the demands of most high-speed home internet connections, including basic video streaming and online gaming.

Routers compatible with 802.11g can be found at retail stores and second-hand outlets at affordable prices. However, when multiple devices are connected and active simultaneously, an 802.11g network might quickly reach its performance limits.

Apart from 802.11g routers specifically designed for home fixed installations, travel routers are also popular. These routers cater to the needs of business professionals and households requiring sharing a single wired Ethernet connection among wireless devices.
