Verizon Demonstrates mmWave-Based Internet Service for Multi-Dwelling Units
On July 21, 2023, Verizon showcased a practical application for deploying mmWave-based internet service to multi-dwelling units, aiming to extend its reach in the licensed 37GHz to 39GHz spectrum.
In this point-to-multipoint demonstration, Verizon presented a network design that is not only cost-effective but also quicker to deploy in areas with numerous distributed end users. The setup involved establishing an airlink between a central rooftop and a radio situated in a simulated block of flats. The signal was transmitted over coaxial cable, permeating the building and reaching a data processing unit and modem.
Leveraging the existing wiring of the building, the signal was then distributed to end-user routers, providing broadband coverage throughout the simulated end points. Instead of using mobile options, Verizon opted for a simplified broadband network gateway to manage internet traffic over its public IP network, which resulted in excellent capacity and latency.
Adam Koeppe, the SVP of technology planning at Verizon, emphasized that the infrastructure and assets required for this innovative design had been developed over several years. Besides mmWave technology, Verizon employed fiber, edge metro, and core infrastructure in the demonstration.
Regarding hardware, Verizon used custom solutions, but discussions were underway with equipment providers about radio access equipment.
Verizon plans to continue refining this technology throughout the year. Fixed Wireless Access has become a growing sector for the company, with 393,000 net additions of subscribers in Q1, compared to 194,000 in the same period of 2022.
